The Green Fairy

On Saturday we headed to Hangar 1, a local Vodka distillery in Alameda. Hangar 1 was also the first distillery to sell Absinthe when it was legalized by the government last winter. A little history. The drink is a green liquor made of three main components: grande wormwood, green anise and florence fennel. A popular drink in the 1920s in Europe, many writers and artists drank absinthe and described having hallucinations. The drink used to be served with a sugar cube that was melted into the drink, which contains an alcohol content higher than 60 percent. What many didn't know, was that those same writers would soak the sugar cube in opium before putting it in their drink. We tried the absinthe over ice -- it tasted like smooth Jager with a much higher alcohol content. A good experience, but the hype didn't live up to the result.

The best part might be the label, which features a monkey using a femur bone to beat on a cowbell.
